Dear David:
I have been using lustres since 1970....so I believe I am well qualified
to answer your letter of enquiry.....
Just to give you some background on myself.... which you may or may not
wish.... i do handbuilt porcelain as well as stoneware....The porcelain
however is what I lustre.....all of my works are sold to shops....here
in Fla. & manystates in the USA.....
Alright....down to your probs...
First off..... set aside a brush for your lustre work.... only use this
brush.....a very soft one....
Secondly..... have a small bowl just to pour your lustre out of that wee
bottle into.!!! =A0 Clean the bowl first ....I use acetone....let it
dry.... no dust....
=A0=A0You may then use a much LARGER brush than the l/4 "!!!!!! When I
am finished with lustre glazing....I rinse brush & bowl with
acetone....& place both in a plastic bag.... until the next usage....
It will probably surprise you to hear that in Florida.... I must thin
the lustre almost 50% with the lustre thinner!!!!!! due to our
humidity.... Thick luster is a no-no.....It must be the consistency of
iodine....
I Vent my kiln until I turn it to High... &* fire to Cone 018 or
020....when I can smell no more chemicals.....I turn the kiln to
high....& close the lid.... When the kiln shuts off.....I plug the top
peep hole & leave it to cool....
till the next day
Do NOT rush the firing process....the kiln must be turned to high ONLY
when no more "smells" emerge.....
Do NOT be afraid to use the lustre thinner, they mfg. it for a
purpose!!!!!:)
Having visited Uk many times.... I realize you may have humidity probs
as well....
Keep in mind that Lustres thicken when opened....I buy mine by the Pint
from California.....at the mfg....Med=3DMar....for a most reasonable price=
compared to those wee bottles you are speaking of... 'However, the
demand for my "sea series" with Lustre has definitely gone `down
here....
