Hi folks,
I am a bit new to this list, so if this subject has been talked about to
death, please be patient.
There are a handful of potters that are seriously interested in starting a
co-op. Our city has none, and ours would be the first. I am most
interested in learning what others have done to organize and run one. We
are in California, and we wouldn't mind traveling a reasonable distance to
visit some up and running co-ops. How they work (function and
convenience)is of major interest, and I expect that each co-op has it's own
personality.
I know that Ceramics Monthly has an article or two, but hearing more
personal experiences are always enlightening. Presently, we are shopping
for a location. All suggestions, ideas, comments, directions, etc. are most
welcome and gratefully received.
Thanks,
Susan

Where in California. I just moved here to Long Beach and I would be very
interested in helping to start a co-op if you are nearby...let me know.

hi susan,
just this past weekend, i had the good fortune to come
upon an artists co-op in Fort Bragg, California (north
of san fran)called the Northcoast Artists Cooperative
Gallery (362 North Main St). i spoke with the nicest
woman there! her name was leslie campbell. she's a
member of the group and was working her required time in
the gallery. she was extremely helpful and most eager to
share information and encourage others to form
cooperatives.
their group is 15 years in existence and currently has
24 members. each member works 1 1/2 days in the gallery
(a really nice space in a good location on a main drag
in town), and, has some other function such
as "promotor", "facilitator", "computer guru", etc. she
gave me some hard copy info: a copy of the by-laws
(which they routinely update), an application for
becoming a member (a committee juries the work), and she
even hand wrote a list of the "jobs" because there was
no where to make a copy. they don't have a web-site
yet, but the comp-guru is working on it. i could send
you a copy of the info if you'd like (send mailing
address off-line).
good luck!
lauren in nj, where i wish we had a successful working
co-op, too! who knows? maybe someday...
