Clayarters:

I've noticed a number of recent posts about Seth Cardew workshops throught
the country. I would like to share my experience at Seth's slide
presentation and lecture at the Craft Guild of Dallas a week ago.

Mr. Cardew conducted a four day workshop in Dallas last week. It was Finals
week and I was unable to participate in the workshop, but as with every
workshop at the Craft Guild there was a reception for the artist and
lecture/slide presentation one evening that was open to the public which I
was able to attend. I arrived a little early and fortunately was able to
visit at length with Mr. Cardew prior to the slide show.

I found him to be a warm and generous man. I was able to ask him some
questions about his father Michael as well as other queries about his life's
work. He was very generous with his answers and time. I was especially
keen to know about whether it was true or apocryphal that his father ate off
lead glazed earthenware his whole life and suffered no ill effects.

The lecture and slide presentation was wonderful. Seth regaled us with
stories about Michael, Winchcomb, Wenford Bridge, West Africa, sculpture,
design, et al. I must confess to having a fondness for all things in the
Anglo-Oriental tradition and Seth's stories about Bernard, Hamada, and St.
Ives kept me entranced.

All in all it was wonderful evening. I would encourage anyone who has a
chance to particpate in Seth's workshop or attend his lecture to go.

Ciao,

Rafael

Dear Rafael,

I think you would appreciate an article printed in "Pottery In =
Australia" Vol 33, No 3. Spring 1994 entitled "Cardew Outback". It is a =
useful reference for students who wish to know more about Seth's work =
and philosophy.
