soda ash solution

I am trying to make a soda ash solution to soak bisque pieces in. I have
some information that said to mix 6 cups of water and 1 cup of soda ash, and
boil until the solution is clear. I did this and boiled it for over an hour
with no result.

Does anyone know anything about this?

To make a saturated solution of soda ash, boil the WATER, and mix
soda ash in until the soda ash begins to precipitate out.
This solution can then be brushed or otherwise applied to
your bisqued work.

Can't remember the percentage of soda ash, but I once soaked a piece in
soda ash solution overnight. It dried to a thick mossy mat, fired (^10)
to a green pile of sludge. Lesley, from her collection of boo-boo's.

FYI--I have, extremely successfully, completed pieces that were soaked in
soda ash in the past. I only soak for about 3-5 minutes, though, and fire
to ^6. I work with a red clay, so the soda ash reacts with the iron to give
the clay body a wonderful sheen!

Just a suggestion about soda ash -- I keep mine in a hot pot. When I unplug
it and it cools much of the ash precipitates out and makes a big solid mass
on the bottom. When I heat it back up it dissolves with a little coaxing.
It's very convenient. chris
