Dear Tim,
I use terracotta clays for all my dragons, griffins and gargoyles, all =
winged critters. A solid slab of clay detailed to suit and affixed (I =
just gouge out the area the wing is to be situated) with slurry, then =
cover the area joined with damp newspaper and fire when dry.
