When I read the page on the show's theme, I, too, was puzzled. It didn't seem clear
what the premise of the show was, nor did it seem intentionally vague.
I sent an email requesting more info about the show & theme - if I get a response,
I'll post any clearer info I may get.
Though with the deadline for slides being so soon, I don't know that I'll have time
to prepare something meaningful that fits whatever the specific aim of the show is
with so little time. I'm disappointed - I had hoped to apply for the first time
this year.

Does the NCECA always have a "theme" that determines what artists can
submit?

I don't see any point in making work specifically for
a show theme. You might get into the show, but after
a string of such 'successes', you're left with a body
of work that lacks its own direction; a kite in the
wind.
There are a lot of shows out there. Do your own work,
and enter the shows that suit it.

I agree with you, Snail, that we shouldn't change
our direction just to be in a show.
On the other hand, I have often found that I
learned something valuable or that something good
happens with my work or I think about something
differently if I take on an "assignment" of sorts.
It's especially helpful when I feel stuck or in a
rut.

Pam-
I agree; that's why I enjoy commissions. Sort of
'shakes out the cobwebs' of habit!
