bisque temp for raku/^6-10

I bisque everything to about that temperature. The
only exception is for earthenware that will get
low-fire glazes. The outgassing from underfired
bisque can badly affect some colors, especially the
reds, so I always bisque things destined for low-
fire glazes to a temperature higher than the ^06
glaze firing will require, usually ^04 or so.

(More often I put those low-fire glazes onto work
that's been already fired to stoneware temperatures,
so the original bisque was about ^08-^010. Then a
firing (with or without glaze) to ^4-6, and then
(sometimes) another glaze firing at ^06, and (maybe)
another at ^018.)

The bisque firing for work intended for stoneware
temps only needs to be hot enough to fuse the clay,
so it won't dissolve when being glazed. Most people
pick a specific temperature based on how absorbent
they want the clay to be when they glaze it. A wide
range of temperatures is suitable, anything from
^012 to ^03 or so; the main thing is to be consistent,
especially if you apply your glazes by dipping. The
level of vitrification affects the absorbency, which
affects the thickness of the glaze layer. (If you
brush your glazes, it's less critical.)

I figure, if it's going to be fired higher later
on, why burn your money and time with a hotter-than-
necessary bisque?

This was a rather confusing statement - it made
more sense when the previous post was above it.

"That" temperature is ^08, (as mentioned in the
post I was responding to,) not the ^6-10 in the
subject line!

Sorry if anyone was deeply confused due to my
unfortunate formatting! :p
