changes: art building remodel (kinda long)

Hello all,

Today we had yet another meeting in the process that will culminate in a
remodeled Art Building and new Art Gallery at Tacoma Community College.
What prompted me to write was the post by Diane Mead about tired
teachers and the Cha changes post title.

Today's meeting was about what had to be removed (virtually everything)
and stored to be moved back in later. What arrangements we would make
to store them etc.

This process started right after finals in December 1997. The
administration decided that we would apply to remodel the Art Building
to the State Higher Education board. We had several meetings and I was
charged with coming up with a program for the remodel. Then there were
meetings with architects and engineers to see what was feasible with the
budget constraints. My earlier education as an engineering major
helped, but the headaches returned just like when I was an engineering
major.

We were lucky enough to be chosen to remodel our building after the
project was bid by architectural firms one was chosen and then the
meeting started in earnest. There were many discussions about programs
in ceramics, drawing, sculpture, painting photography, printmaking, and
computer design. Designs were drawn and changes were made meetings were
held over a year and three quarters and here we are.

The next step is to pack up the art building and move out right after
finals. Anyway one thing we are doing is bringing a dumpster and we
face throwing out things that we have not used or are on too bad
condition to keep, move out, and move back in. This change will be a
good one (I think) a real chance to start a school year with a totally
clean studio and only things we want hanging around. No more student
pots dating back 5 years hanging around.

I am not looking forward to the work, but I am looking forward to the
changes. I hope to have some before and after pictures of the Art
Building and of the new gallery building on my web site in the future.
I will let you know when that happens.
