Jingdezhen@Louisbourg@The Gardiner Museum
Part of a weeklong festival in Toronto, four distinguished potters from the
famed porcelain city of Jingdezhen share the many intricate steps of
traditional porcelain production. Working with Li Jainsheng, master Chinese
ceramic artist and Guest Curator at the Jingdezhen Museum of Ceramic Art, is
Deng Shao Ping, master porcelain potter; Zou Xiao Song, expert in enamel
brush decoration; and Yu Jun, potter and decorator of porcelain.
In 1997, Li Jiansheng visited two exhibitions of 18th century Chinese blue
and white porcelain in Nova Scotia: at the Nova Scotia College of Art and
Design and at Fortress Louisbourg. Upon recognizing that the designs
originated from Jingdezhen, he established a team of ceramic artists in
Jingdezhen to work with archaeologists from Louisbourg to produce
handcrafted reproductions using traditional methods. Some of the original
pieces from Fortress Louisbourg will be on display at the Gardiner Museum,
in addition to the outstanding reproduction pieces presently being made by
master potters in Jingdezhen and available at the Gardiner Shop.
