Lucy Lewis Garcia used to teach classes in her home at
Acoma pueblo, to students from the University of New
Mexico ceramics department. (She is one of Lucy Lewis's
daughters.) She showed how to dig clay, cut yucca for
brushes, make colored slips for decorating, make and fire
pots, the whole works.

Bill Gilbert at the university was the liason person for
these classes. I don't have his number, but perhaps you
could reach him through the art department, or perhaps
the department will have a contact number for Mrs. Garcia
herself. The department's # is (505)277-5861.

You might also ask the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center in
Albuquerque. (Sorry, I don't have their number.)

I would like to take some high school students to New Mexico next April =
during
our spring break.
What I am hoping is that there is a potter at one of the Pueblos that =
would be
willing to conduct a workshop for 20 students. I know there are a few =
that do
workshops involving gathering the clay, making pots and then a primitive =
firing. This is
what I would like my students to experience.
I have a tour group that will organize a "custom" trip as long as there =
are 20 paying participants.
But they need the names of people that would lead this workshop.
Do any of you know of someone that does this.
You may email me off list,if you like.
Thank you.
