paper clay & black clay

OK - I'm a newbie here - I have searched the archives and have found much
information on each of these topics but I need information on the
possibility of combining these two materials.
My daughter and I are involved in covering a very large fiberglass form
with a mosic design. My concern with using traditional tile or ceramic
pieces for this project is that it would create an 'immovable object'. We
have not found out exactly what the surface area is but it is BIG.
What thoughts, information or imput would any of you have for us. We are
open to suggestions.
It seems to me that mosaic pieces made from paper clay would be the ticket -
- and if it could be black than that would cut a glaze firing out of the
process.

Thanks in Advance ---

Martha,

In order to get black paper clay you could also try wedging a black stain
into the paper clay.

Hi Martha,

I've made my own paper clay, just for mending pieces. I made some of
brown stoneware clay and poured out a small amount onto some
newspaper. A year later I've never fired it. I can pick it up by one
edge and wave it about without damaging it. It is maybe 1/8 " thick,
maybe less ( 2mm ). It is strong, even dry and green, and it is
light.

About colour, I think that whatever colourants are in your clay, or
that you put in your clay for the maturing temperature of your clay,
will show up fine in your fired piece. I don't think paper in the
clay has any effect on colour, as the paper all burns out.

So, perhaps you can just purchase black clay body, powdered, and add
the commercially available pulp, mixing these in the proportions
suggested by the manufacturer of the pulp, and add water to the mix
until of the working consistency desired.

Good luck!

Helen
