extruder advice

I had sent this off about a week ago and did not see it posted =
(although I may have missed it in my hurried scanning of headings). Here =
it is again.
Our guild is going to buy an extruder for the studio. The studio is used =
by about 55 members as well as students in the fall, winter and spring. =
Any ideas on what would be
the best buy would be greatly appreciated. We debated for a while but I =
was asked to put it out to you generous and intelligent folks (enough =
sucking up for you???) =3Do)
Thanks for your input,

lee, i've been using a northstar for about 7 years
and it has seved me well. i'm thinking about
replacing it with one that i can put an expansion box
on and also has that bar on top with several notches
in it where the handle fits in for better leverage. i
could use that on my northstar when i'm working with a
firmer batch of clay.
but when you are starting up a studio that extra
$100 can often sway a decision. good luck

I am going to purchase an extruder for my studio. Can anyone offer any
recommendations as to brand, and things I should be looking for? Has anyone
had any bad experiences with a particular brand?

Lee, get a book and make your own.... I know, it's so much of a hassle, but
than you control what is best for you......

Lee;
A new book is out by Daryl E. Baird called The Extruder Book. It
has fairly detailed building "how to" section that describes making
small human powered extruders from common materials. It is
singulary lacking on any information on powered and large extruders.
It does have a very nice Gallery section that shows lots of very
inspiring extruder work. The section on die making is very helpful as
well.
The book is available through ACerS as well as other book vendors.
I would also add that I much prefer square or rectangular tubes to
pipe. They are much easier to clean, and if you weld they are easier to
work with and get stronger welds. I am sure that they could be easily
addapted to the methods described in Baird's book as well. Cut the
top edge at a fifteen degree angle and the plunger is self locating,
allowing you to keep your fingers away from the danger areas as you
start your plunge. Long handles give you more power. The best is a
double handle with a grip handle that is 90 degrees to the machine.
With this set up you face the extruder as you power stroke and you
use your body weight not your arms. It is also much easier on the
lower back.
Another tip; computer "paint shop" type programs are great ways to
get shapes like elipses for patterns. Squares, circles, hex shapes are
easier to do right on the blank with compas and straight edge style
geometry (a tri-square is also helpful).
Good luck

windy gray day. Great day to work on some new extruder die ideas.
