Hi All,
I have a question regarding a kiln that I am possibly going to purchase. It
is a Paragon R3, and has new elements in it. Internal measurements are 16
diameter by 19 inches depth.
Question is: Does anyone out there have one, and what do you think of it.
I know that this is a VERY old kiln, and as it does not come with a sitter
or computer controller, I am wondering what people think is a good price.
As you can tell, this is my first kiln purchase.
Thanks in advance.
Garry

No computer controller is not a problem to me; I've never
had one and don't know what I'm missing, I suppose. I like
having a sitter, but I could definitely live without it
and fire with witness cones only, if the price were right.
It is kind of small, but that's only a problem if you can't
do the sort of work you need to in it.
More important is the condition. Are the channels that hold
the elements in good condition? No missing bits? No corrosion
on the connectors and plug? Assuming great condition, I might
pay $150, tops. It might be worth more if it had a sitter or
were larger, but don't pay more than that for this one. There
are other kilns out there for sale.

Hi Garry, I just finished refitting a very old Jen-Ken kiln with new elements and
a new Orton controller...If your bricks, outer "skin" , top, bottom etc. are in
good shape...just go for new "innards". This is an old kiln I bought 2nd hand
years ago and struggled with for 4 years trying to get to cone 6 each time I
fired. I had replaced elements, controller etc. previously but not with quality
elements & controller. After many failures, I decided on a new kiln...well
after researching the available ^10 kilns (I want to go up to that cone) and
checking out features, prices, shipping etc. , I finally thought about just
upgrading the old one and keeping it. I would suggest you look into this
possibility. Remember you can put in a thermocoupler, elements, controller in
the existing "box" and have a relatively new kiln. I am firing mine today for
the "maiden voyage" and will share the info with you if you like. Just email me
off list.
Good luck.

Can anyone tell me anything about a particular model of Paragon kiln? I
may try to buy it at auction on Sunday, and Paragon is closed to
questions today. The model number is AA8B or AA88. I'm wondering how big
it is, how high it fires, and whether it would be suitable for the
bunsen-burner/ITC/reduction setup I've been reading about.
Thank you all,
Hilary McClure

The A-88B is 18" deep, 17 1/2" wide, 8-sided. The AA-8B is a 6 1/2"
deep collar that fits on top of the A-88B. Parts are still
available.
The kiln, with or without the collar, fires to 2300 deg. F.
Note: this kiln requires a 4-wire, 40 amp outlet.
