weed burner plan

A while back, there was a discussion on the smallest kiln and several =
people made some tiny test ones. It occured to me to put some 1 1/2 =
inch firebrick together and cover up my hot plate. Well, I wasn't =
thinking, obviously, and about 500 degrees, it finally dawned on me that =
I was not insulated on the bottom, and probably would melt the aluminum =
and ruin the hot plate. So, what I need is a small burner, to set the =
thing up as a gas fired updraft. Probably about 2/3 cu.ft. total. The =
reason for all this mucking around is I think there must be a =
straightforward way to make a small kiln with a 5 gal. bottle that I =
could use as a demo of how to make and use a small kiln at home to make =
small work, or glass slumping for the students to use at home. If I had =
a plan for a weed burner/easy type burner, I could take it to the iron =
guy here and he could make one to try, then maybe a few more just to =
keep on hand, to sell at workshops on low cost clayworking, which I will =
be doing around here. DOES ANYONE HAVE A PLAN FOR A WEED BURNER SET UP =
FOR HEATING A KILN ABOUT 2/3 CU.FT? I would very much appreciate a =
drawing of some kind simple enough for me and the iron guy to =
understand. Thank you for any help you can offer. Melinda Collins in =
Guatemala.

Good Day to All ,

Melinda ,

you can use a bunsen burner or stove connection .

I bought some castable refractory and used a
cardboard packing cylinder , to make a small
5 sectional kiln , firing to 1200 deg.c .
Designed for single ware gas firing ,

I can send you pictures if you would like to see
it .

Answers .
[ 1 ] The amber is from Iron Colouring .

[ 2 ] Ask on Clayart for the Ball Mill plans .

Pleasant day to you ,

Ron:
I have a weed burner kiln that I lined with two layers of alumina wool. I
used a 55 gallon drum for this, but it could very easily be cut down to the
size you want. They key to success is the oxygen to air ratio. The weed
burner does not have an air control, so you must allow for this by using
secondary air which is drawn in where the burner enters the burner post. The
opening I made is about 6 X 9 inches. I am very careful not to get the
burner too far into the opening. If the burner tip gets too red, you need to
pull it out a bit. Also I cut a draft hole at the top about 6 X 9 inches and
I used a soft brick or two to control the updraft. This works well for Raku
temperatures and possibly higher. The bottom of the drum was also insulated
with 2 layers of 2 inch alumina wool.

Hope this helps you.

Bob
