Hi all! Next week a student of mine from small-town Gold Bar,
Washington is going to be visiting New York City and asked me
about which galleries to visit. She is interested in mostly
functional work.
The two that came to mind are the Dai Ichi Gallery (whose
website doesn't say what's showing in July), and the John Elder
Gallery. Any other suggestions?
Thanks!

Dear Pat;

Suggest the Babcock Galleries at 724 Fifth Ave, at 57th Street.
They just finished a show of Warren McKenzie's pots, and will open the
American Shino Show September 8th. Don't know if they will have any pottery
shows in between, but check them out. Just aroung the corner from gallery
Dai ichi Arts and Garth Clark. Tell her to take smelling salts, applied
after checking the prices.

Regards, Hank in Eugene

Start with SARA 953 Lexington Ave bet. 69th and 70th.
A shop, not a gallery carrying primarily Japanese, a
wee bit overpriced IMHO but nice functional work

Babcock just closed (?) a show of Michael Cardew work.

Dai Ichi has a show of Mark Hewitt and Jeff Shapiro -
by NY standards REASONABLY PRICED, Hank. Interesting
for this gallery. Nice show incl. some strong work
particularly in Mark's intimate functional pieces.

John Elder Gallery also shows ceramics but not
functional work.

Go to Moss in SoHo - change the pace, look beyond
pots and see some very au courant European ceramics -
designers working with a factory prdtn. situation --
very interesting.

Then go for a late afternoon drink at Windows on the
World atop the World Trade Center - there's nothing
like it back home.

(for more restaurants, write off list)

Go to my website below, follow the link to Potter's Portal (recently updated
with Helen's new links), then follow the link to the Resources page. You'll
find two files about NY there.

Hi

A collaborator of mine asked me to post the following.

I am trying to figure out which galleries to visit... when there seem to be thousands around here.

If you could get your work into a "dream gallery" in New York City, which gallery would you choose?

Sandy
