Hello everybody,

Does anyone have suggestions for things to do or see (clay
or non-clay) in Cancun? We will be spending 7 days there,
starting July 4th, and was hoping to get some advice from
those who have been there. I've never been to Mexico
before, so I'm a little bewildered. No hablo mas espanol.

Also, the first week of August, we will be at Emerald Isle
North Carolina, near the Lookout Lighthouse. Similar advice
for that area would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Sylvia Shirley

When you go to Cancun you will be going to the Miami Beach of Mexico. You
do not even need to speak Spanish.

There are some excellent side trips you can take to see some of the Mayan
ruins that are close by. In my opinion they are worth the effort to go see.
You can talk to a tour company right there in Cancun or rent a car and drive
your self.

The beaches and water are beautiful and you can lay the whole time at the
beach or in the pool and get that great sun tan.

Here's a couple non-clay suggestions:

Take the ferry across to Isla Mujares. You can do it as a day trip, or find
a hotel room for a night. It's smaller and less crazy than Cancun, and has
very nice beaches.

If you are not locked in to staying in Cancun, rent a car and start
traveling south. The area between Cancun and Tulum is called the Mexican
Riviera, and it's very beautiful. Tulum is a great area to stay, it has
wonderful beaches and the ruins there are worth seeing.
If you head inland from there, you can go to Coba, which has great ruins.
There is a small local hotel, or a Club Med there.

I would suggest that you get a Frommer's Travel guide for the area, to look
for more ideas and places to stay. It's a good idea to call ahead and make
reservations.

Have fun!

There is a beautiful resort just south of Cancun I believe the name is Playa
Del Carmen, did some drift diving there few years ago. Great beach, protected
cove. If you want to "rough it a little" Just south of Tulum tucked in the
trees is Don Hermando's Resterante. Great beaches, long and white. Also did
some shore diving, went some 300 ft. out only 9 ft. deep. No current to speak
of. The restaurant was the best food for less than 3.00 US.(1990).
Accommodations consisted of grass hut with hammocks. Bathrooms and showers
in another building. Cost in 1990 I was told was 50 cents. Looked like a
great place to enjoy the beach have good food and relax. I all ready had a
room in Cancun. I found it too much of a tourist place.
