Dear Fran Stearns,
I'm not sure I can give an answer to the question about using an added =
thermal blanket. But it might be better if you could record the =
temperature on your pyrometer every 10 minutes as it cools and plot the =
curve. It then becomes possible to ascertain the rate of cooling at any =
particular temperature.
I understand that it is essential to dissipate heat so that the ware =
inside a kiln has the same temperature thoughout the mass of the bisque =
or mature clay, edge to edge, surface to interior. This ensures that the =
phase change occurs simultaneously in each object. Dunting happens when =
one side or portion changes phase before the other. This sets up the =
stress differences which lead to a fracture.
Best regards,
Ivor
