Hi Sylvia,

I am writing this quickly because my two year old just fell asleep. So here
goes....

Cancun is as touristy as you can get. I went there for a wedding after
spending a week in Oaxaca at Eric Mindling's workshop. After being in
culture rich Oaxaca, Cancun was like coming back to the U.S. Cancun is
younger than I am, so finding culture was almost impossible. So if you are
going to get some sun, you should have a good time. If you are looking for
pottery or culture, skip Cancun and give Eric a call in Oaxaca. He is a
wonderful knowledgeable guide and a great person to boot.

I did manage to find a small but excellent museum in the downtown area. It
is in the convention center, any taxi driver should be able to get you
there. It has a small fee. It has some wonderful examples of Mayan
pottery. I would suggest asking the taxi driver to come back for you in an
hour or more if you want to shop also. Otherwise you will pay three times
as much to get back to your hotel. I had a heck of a time getting to my
hotel because I didn't bring enough money.

Chichen Itza is definitely worth a visit. It will take you a whole day by
bus. If we could have afforded the time, I would have liked to have stayed
the night and toured at our leisure. The tour is excellent, I just wish we
had been able to take more time browsing the gift shop. I found two books
on Mexican pottery that were gems.

You will hear about other Mayan sites, you should check them out if time
permits. Isle Mujeres for example. We also did some interesting things
like, going on a submarine ride (not for those with a weak stomach).

Don't worry about speaking Spanish, most of the workers at the hotels don't
either. Most of the workers at our hotel were from Scandinavian countries.
So you might bone up on German or something. Ha-ha.

The most bizarre deal we did was buy our souvenir t-shirts at the Cancun
Wal-Mart. So that if they bled or shrank we could return them when we got
home. :-)

Sincerely,
Nikki Simmons
