Just spent 3 weeks in China (May25-June 13) on Chinese Ceramic Cultural
Exchange led by Gungzhen "Po" Zhou and Richard Notkin. Started with 3
days in Shanghai, visited Shanghai Museum,Shanghai University Ceramic
studio, and the showroom and factory of Li Youyu who designs and makes
the interiors of restaurants in clay. Then 5 days at the Yixing
International Ceramic Art Symposium where our group of 12 participated
in an International Clay Art Exhibition. 4 of our group were awarded
prizes in the show. We also shared slides of our work during the
symposium.
On to Jingdezhen where we saw 12 feet high porcelain vases being thrown
in 4 parts and put together while bone dry.
On to Xian and the terracotta warriors which are awesome. Also visited
the reproduction factory where they are making the warriors today. One
of our members, Geo Lastomirsky, bought a full sized one and had it
shipped home to Seattle.
We visited Chen-lu, a pottery village in the mountains where one of our
members, Annie Schliffer, was going to stay for 2 weeks and study with
the potter there, Mr Li.
On to Beijing, the group visited the Great Wall, the Forbidden City
(which has a great ceramic gallery) and many antique markets. I started
a collection of old fish plates.
Po Zhou leads a ceramic tour to China every year, he is responsible,
caring tour leader and I really recommend his tours.
