fire paint

just talked to the president of firefree paint in california.

sounds like a wonderful new product.

i am getting a gallon on monday from the
minnesota rep...

they use kaowool suspended in a binder that can be
sprayed or brushed on to most surfaces.
the surface will not burn. he claims to have a one hour
window at 2000F before the underlayment will burn.
he had never thought of potters as customers...he does
now.

it is sorta itc for outside the kiln.
sixty bucks a gallon. not bad, really.

if it does the trick, it is worth a great deal.

he claims that painting the beams above the kiln and around
the stack will protect it totally.

he is getting state fire marshalls to recognize its value.
long, slow process.

nothing is as important as safety from fire.
it scares the pee out of me.
some people will wear a mask for everything, and not
give a hoot about fire safety.

my friend bob fritz two weeks ago had a fire in his kiln shed...and
this week he had a gas blow back...hard to believe an
old time, professional potter would have either thing happen.
he is in shock. but, we will get to the bottom of this. all safety
systems in place, but, something did not work.
failsafe, not something to believe.

yes, i have applied it all over the
beams of wood, that make up the roof
of my firing room.

it went on very well....of course, don't know
if it works...no fires.....
it is like owning a dog that keeps lions from
my back yard....
it works, no lions.

but, really, from all my tests on wood with a torch.
it works..
sorta itc for wood or burnables.

Anybody want to split a pale?

I'm willing to spend $100 on itc to make my kiln last longer..

I'm willing to spend $40 to keep my house from burning down around the
kiln..

I called the company and found that the product comes in a 5 gallon pail
for $65. They will do a special repackage into a one gallon container for
$85 (yes, those figures are correct - repackage costs more).

some have asked about it.

there is a fire proof paint.
i have used it, of course there has
not been a fire.

but, the point is, it will protect a piece of cardboard to 900 degrees.
(or more)_

it seems to be kaowool, ground up in paint.

you can learn more at:

as always, it is expensive.
but, then, how much would a fire cost.?
just like itc.
triple the life of your kiln for one hundred bucks...
`hell, no, i ainta gonna spend no hundred bucks.`
in fact ,often, if it is cheap, it won't work.
mel
alisa in denmark sent me some tea.
it was wonderful.
i use a european press pot to make tea, then
into a thermos.
pours well. and, i don't think it is a sacrilege.
i don't ask permission....i never find anyone
to ask.

Ps,,

I'm in Quincy Illinois,,,

Shipping could get a bit burdensome ( and costly? )

But I'm willing to consider any ideas...
