glaze uneven color problem

Hi!!!

I have been trying to get a celadon-like glaze that puddles in carved =
areas for cone 6 electric kiln. I have tried several different glazes =
and I have been trying to get different colors other than =
celadon-purple, pink, yellow. I have been using mason stains to color =
these base glazes. I have found the glaze color to be very irregular =
--blotchy looking. I am trying to melt the glaze more to remove the =
tong marks but I still find any drips to be noticeable and if I rub the =
drip I find the color looks much lighter in that spot. =20

One of the glazes I have been trying is from the clayart archive. Does =
anyone use this glaze? Does anyone have a suggestion on how to make the =
color of the glaze look more even all over the pot?

Hi Gail,

Seems like you are reaching for the unreachable. The very quality that
causes the "pooling" of colour in recesses that makes celadon so special
causes ALL variations in thickness to be noticeable. Maybe a change in
application technique ( spraying?) would work. I know you have many years of
experience glazing ... you are no beginner! Another possibility would be
to design the piece for dipping without tongs ( a substantial , grip-able
foot ring?).

This is an area that interests me too , so I would be interested in your
results.

Good luck and greetings from Linda, in Toronto!

Dear Gail,
When I was doing majolica I applied with a brush. Before beginning
overglaze applications I actually sanded the glaze to be visually even.
I used sheet rock sanding screen. fine mexh.
For faux celedon, Oct. 1999 CM or Oct 2000 had Rick (senior moment)
______ ^6 glaze recipes in it. Gail
(another senior moment)_______ was listing her glaze that had crazing
problem on her porcelain. It didn't craze on my porcelain. I use Bray ^6
porcelain. I think you'll find all these recipes in the archives and
discussions. I found as Rick suggested using my own base with .5% copper
and a smidgeon .02% black mason stain to grey the color just a touch. I
actually have been doing lots of tests with this and have a beautiful
glaze. You are correct that a drip really destorys the overall effect
you are seeking. Try a light sanding of that drip with sheetrock sanding
mesh.
