John-
Yes the kiln Bartlow controller is type S and the Partlow was using a
type K.
I have a type R that I can use on the Partlow but I am too lazy to put
it on as I have to reprogram it and substitute an extension lead wire for
type R with a type R connector into the partlow terminal block. Right now
I have a type k extension wire and a type K Omega connector so it is easy
to unhook the K and carry the instrument around. I had the K on there
because we were using the instrument on the soda kiln at school ( It was
inside a porcelain disposable thermowell ) and I did not want to risk the
expensive type R.
Do you think the type S and R will track?
For those who are unclear as to what I am talking about here S and R
are two different kinds of platinum thermocouples and they are accurate to
a temperature beyond cone 12 while type k poops out at around cone 9.
I just got a CD from Orton that tells how to use a self supporting cone
to check the temperature to within 2 deg C in a kiln. I will try that to
calibrate the thermocouple pyrometers at the high end.

Fred,
Are the controller and the chart recorder on different types of
thermocouples?
