British Artist Michael Flynn Visits Toronto This Fall
Sunday, September 23

Contemporary ceramist Michael Flynn has worked extensively with the theme of
the harlequin figure, and is therefore a most appropriate guest on the
opening weekend of the Gardiner Museum’s fall exhibition, Harlequin
Unmasked: Comedy Transformed, a show that will reveal the history and
fascinating transformation of this influential theatre form—from its humble
origins as street theatre to the gardens and tables of the aristocracy. (The
exhibition opens September 22 and runs through January 20, 2002.)

Born in 1947, Michael Flynn took a BA in ceramics from the Cardiff College
of Art, and then an MA in fine art. His work is widely exhibited in both
private and public galleries, and he is the recipient of numerous awards.

Through his dynamic ceramic figures he brings the commedia tradition into
the present day. The vitality of his harlequins and his family figures taps
into the emotion and energy that animates all great theatre, and reveals the
enduring appeal of the commedia dell’arte.

Participants are invited back to the exhibition in the Gardiner Museum,
where a number of Michael Flynn’s pieces will be on display.
