that can be thrown without being aged....after being mixed in a Peter
Pugger

Hoping that someone out there may have a fix for this particular =
dilemia. I am currently in the third day of a 14 day salt firing =
workshop at NAU, in Flagstaff. Great facility and great people, =
BUT...the Soldner clay mixer is on the blink and the clay mixing chore =
is left to a large Peter Pugger...and the clay that is being mixed in =
the pugger leaves ALOT to be desired. The recipe follows:
Lincoln 60 Fire clay 55
Om #4 25
Redart 10
Custer 10
Sand 10
This clay body throws very well, IF it has been aged for a month or =
so..but is extremly "short" just out of the mixer..
So..does anyone have a ^10 Clay body, that uses Lincoln 60 fireclay as =
its primary ingredient, that when mixed in a PP is a pleasure to throw =
as it comes out of the machine, or is this too much to ask?
Hoping someone can help, as the poor souls that did not bring there own =
bagged clay are having a devil of a time throwing this "stuff".

That is the standard clay I use and like....
So age for a day or two is enough...

I would add 2% bentonite as a quick fix. If you don't have that increase
the OM4 at the expence of the Lincoln - start with 35 OM4 and 45 Lincoln.

If you use bentonite make sure it is dry mixing in well before adding water.

By the way - if you are going to use the clay right away you can get
instant plasticity by adding vinegar to the mix. Start with 1 cup per 100
wt dry. If that is not enough try two ............

Epson salts is a good flocculator - 0.2 lbs. per 100 dry will do it. Just
make sure the salts are all disolved (hot water) before adding them to the
dry with the water.

If you try to store clay with vinegar added it's gonna smell pretty bad in
a few weeks.

Hello I'm a potter from Australia and I've just joined
the clayart web sight.

I live in Ballarat, Vicoria. I am pleased to be a part
of the clayart web. There is a group of people firing
an 'Olsen' kiln to 1300'c in conjunction with the
University of Ballarat's Ceramics Department Head
Peter Pilven. We had hoped to do a live filming of a
woodfiring and broardcast it over the internet to gain
good exposure for the ceramics department and ceramics
in genral. Unfortunatly we were told this could not
really be done, so we decided to take short clips and
some digital photos which we hope will be posted on
the unversities web page .
If anybody is interested in more info email me back
and I'll try to keep you posted.
Peter Thomas.
