i learned this from nils, he wears one.

it is a wide leather belt, has a big buckle...tommy in
texas has one too (steer horns on it). hooks and pockets all the way around.
keep all of your tools in the pockets...you know, a hammer to
break bad pots, a place to put your stamps..(warren mackenzie's
is empty..keeps gum in there.) i like to carry around my 45 stick,
a nice sharp tool for trimming pots, (kevin caufield keeps spare
parts for his giffin grip...you know how those little parts
roll under your wheel. ) i like a dust pan to pick up scrap clay,
dirt, cats....to re.cycle clay. kurt has 50 little pics to scrape clay from
his designs. dannon keeps a bottle of hair de/tangle in her's. ruth
butler carries a small mac laptop, so she can do a quick edit of\copy
while she works on the wheel.

this is a great break through for potters. keep your tools with you
at all times.
get one...you won't be sorry.
(ron roy carries his dilodometer in one pocket. tom buck has a
slide rule.) mr. frog pottery carries a quart of vinegar and six
lemons with him at
all times, and this belt helps to distribute the weight.

it is rather like the belts the police have...only more earthy.

Dear Mel,

Wonderful notions...

'Carpenters' may be recalled to wear such Belts...I had for years...and I
still
do.

My favourite..that I wear now...began as a Tool-Work-Belt for Hard-Rock
Mineing...in the thirties or so...is wide, heavy leather...iron two-prong
buckle...harness-riveted straps with buckles to slip the 'Bags' or whatever
on...

Has a oval Brass 'tag', riveted on, with a short Number stamped
stoutly in it...so in a 'bad' Cave-in, they could figure out, when they
finally get TO you ( which could be years...) who you were...

Before that...my preference were the 'Mills-Belts' from WWI...that light
kakhi color...brass eyelets...clip/twist buckle-latch...sometimes
dated...sweet.
The 'Mills' were stout woven Cotton-cord...a nice barleycorn texture to
them.

I just returned from the Oregon Country Fair, which had a booth selling
utilikilts (http://www.utilikilts.com). These are tool belts, but
expanded into kilts. They're a great product. I'm not sure about sitting
down at a wheel with one on!

Looking at the Utilikilt website I notice that the "workman's" version you reference is
worn with longjohns underneath and has a feature that creates it into what used to be
known as "kulats", reducing the possibility of sharing more with the world than one might
want to... "going regimental" (wearing a kilt without undershorts) may not be a good
idea. :-)

Are they available via mail order? Which house handles them? Are they
patterned, plain, inlaid, with or without studs, tooled and whose hide do
they come from?

Hi Everybody!

Many years ago, I was a union stagehand. One of a stagehand's very necessary
"body apparel" is a tool belt, for hammers, screw drivers, wrenches, and a
pouch for nails, screws, bolts, nuts, and washers.

I bought my tool belt at Sears. There is a great variety of tool belts at
the larger Sears stores. And most of Sears' Craftsman tools and belts still
come with a no-questions-asked lifetime guarantee.

By the way, I adapted my tool belt for use as a ceramic artist. It still
fits around my waist, and serves me well in this new application. Instead of
a claw hammer in the big loop, I have a mallet (used mostly for squishing
noisy crickets!). The other belt loops are used as Mel and others have
suggested.

Best wishes!
