Dear Janet, and All...
Oh yes..or may need even more so, a Public who may more comfortably=20
and happily want, seek out, and have, Ceramic ware and other Objects,=20
and to enjoy of Clay's endless nuances of form and expression, and
manners of being enjoyed.
=20
But...
I imagine that the larger 'Public', (and the savvy of many who =
discreetly
are deferential to, or may curry the favor of it...) is dimly, deeply, =
and
continuously 'still' tending to be, used to an association of 'Glass' as
expensive, special and luxurious, and in some allusional way,
'superior'...Aristocratically steeped, or excreted...where 'Clay' is as
humble vessels, 'Earth' and 'inferior'...well, humble as =
'Clay'...Peasant
steeped...close to the Earth, rather than close to the Stars or =
'Heavens'...
Intermediating with 'god'...
Even as 'Carpenter' may be, in contrast to Mason...apprehended as humble
rather than elevated...
Now, I hope I am not going to be held accountable FOR these things I
mention, as though I am countenancing them gladly...I am not...I mention
them AS the impressions I have gleaned...living 'in' the world I am =
in...the
'West'...as it were...there! Thats the caveat.
I expect that such an association, has been around since (paned) Glass
'Windows' were a novelty, and 'Glass' for any other purpose, even more =
so,
of novelty....Glass bottles were not common for many people untill very
recently, unless they were well to do...where Clay vessels, and Pots, =
all
that while...were ambient.
For many people, glass which is 'Hand-Made', is somehow
'mysterious' as well...where Ceramics, by equal default of appreciation, =
or imagination, is
felt common...
Perhaps just as how, in movies...for a long time, the voice of 'god'
allways had, an 'English Accent', or some measure OF one...not to let =
'god' have one,
was, well, just not the same...for people to look up...'to'..
Unless it had that accent...it didn't twang the old Peasant, Serf, =
Feudal
'strings'...and those 'strings' (as some may gather me to sometimes =
note...)
get 'twanged' all the time...especially by professional twangers...but
Amateurs as well...to be sure, may twang them at their pleasure.
Just my guess...my 'impression'...
Non Potters who I may know...react much more to 'glass' than to
Ceramics...no matter HOW excellent the Ceramic examples, and how =
mediocre
the 'glass'...and they do so, in what I gather to be, just these ways.
As Thoreau had once remarked, "People tend to respect what they have =
seen
respected, rather than to respect what is respectable..." ( or something
about as that...)
That is the 'sense' I make of it...or tentatively...at least...if =
'sense' it
is...and maybe it isn't...

Where 'god' never says much, in any accent, even if Chihuly...sometimes
does...as he (Chihuly, that is...) lectured here or something =
tonight...'neath his
Ceiling sculpture-installation-thing at the Bellagio, I think...I =
thought
about going...and appear to have stayed home and worked...(sigh...)
