I am thinking of trying some different surfaces on my teapots and was =
wondering what is the best stain to use in terra sig. I know that terra =
sag is dependent on particle size so do I need to ball mill the stain? =
Also, what is the highest temp that terra sag goes to, 06?

Dear William:

I used several different oxides in XX saggar terra sig, fired to cone 04. The colors I've used are:

crocus martis: red purple color
chrome: green
black stain 6600: blue/black
titanium oxide: cream/white
tin oxide: white
cobalt carbonate: light blue

I don't use a ball mill. I add one teaspoon of oxide to one cup of terra sig. Hope this helps.

William,
If you have not already, check out our Vince's treatise on terra sig:

http://digitalfire.com/education/glaze/terasig.htm
Also, you can use a child's rock tumbler to ball mill mixtures of dried terra sig and oxides or stains. (another tip from Vince)

Hope this helps,

William,
There is a good article in the November 2000 issue of Ceramics Technical by
Tulla Elieson on colored terra sigs. She uses chlorides and sulphates as
colorants - particle size not an issue therefore the shine remains. The
article is called "Colour in Terra Sigillata With Water-soluble Colorants".
