shipping a baby kiln?

Hi All ~

A friend of mine wants to buy a little Skutt 609 kiln I'm no longer using,
and I agreed to ship it home for her. "Home" is Georgia, and the kiln and I
are in Oregon. Since I bought this little guy from the store directly, I
haven't a clue how to ship it so it gets to her in good working condition.
Any suggestions? It weighs 55 lbs (according to the booklet). She said I
could "mail it," but I have no experience sending anything this big cross
country. Is this something I can mail? Or would UPS / FedEx be better? Also,
isn't there some kind of foam I can pack it in? Where would I get that?

TIA

Packing a kiln:

1) Whether it is top or front loading, place a sheet of plastic
cushioning material between the kiln and the lid/door. Bubble wrap
would probably work.

2) Make a wood skid. Place cardboard on top of the kiln and fasten
the kiln to the skid with banding.

3) After fastening the kiln to the skid, build a crate around the
kiln.

4) Place "Fragile" stickers on the outside.

I would not send the kiln by UPS. We have ceramic fiber kilns
specifically designed to take the abuse of UPS, but UPS will
demolish typical firebrick kilns.

Wishing you luck,
