Hi, All-

I did my first firing in my new West Coast updraft gas kiln, and it is =
a winner! This thing is so well built and designed, it fired like a =
champ, fast and very evenly. Cone 10 reduction in 6 hours, and =
exactly even top to bottom. Well, the shelf near the flue was cooler, =
but next time I will use a baffle shelf a couple inches from the top =
and I'm sure that will do it. I need to fiddle with the reduction =
control as the copper reds were spotty, but hey! this was the first =
firing. The stoney glazes were a smooth rich mat, and the waxy ones =
nice and fat. I'm really thrilled. Chuck Maddox and his son John =
delivered it themselves - an 8 hour drive from southern California. It =
was exciting to see the big flatbed truck arrive with the kiln on it, =
and nerve wracking to see that the forklift I rented was on the small =
side and looked like it would dump the whole thing any minute. But =
they inched it onto the pad I had prepared. I did have to enlarge my =
gas line to 1 1/4" from the meter, to the tune of $1025, but why get a =
good kiln and not have the gas pressure! If anyone wants to know more =
about it, feel free to email me at hannah.b@mindspring.com =20

Thanks again to those who encouraged me about updraft kilns. You were =
right!
