crazed pots

As some one said a couple of weeks ago, even oxygen will kill you....

I think that the point on this list, and in the beginner class etc. is
that we need to use the materials with respect and use our brains.
Anyone that has been in clay form the 60-70's can probably tell you that
we used to do a lot of stupid things, everything from cutting asbestos
board for the outside of a kiln with a jigsaw and no mask to mixing clay
and glazes without a mask. Fired unventilated kilns indoors, you name
it we probably did it. SOME of us are still around.

You need to know the rules before you should break the rules, and you
need to know your audience and customers. It is a litigious society we
live in today. One story I've heard (don't know if it's true or not) is
about some people that know a particular clay body that is made by one
of the major producers that should not be used for oven ware. They
supposedly go to craft fairs, look for pots made with this stuff, buy
them, use them as advertised and then sue when the pots break.

This issue won't go away because people do not use "best practices". IT
NEEDS TO BE DISCUSSED REGULARLY. If we have heard it enough, we can hit
delete.

It seems to me that we, as a society, have become so cockeyed "health"
consience that we loose a lot of what makes the world such and interesting
place. We're afraid of a bit of barium in a glaze, a crazed cup makes up
blanch so white that we almost pass out. We are afraid to breath in our
work areas. It's enough to make a person puke! And I would but I'm afraid
that I wouldn't clean it all up and it might make me sick.

I too think we need to keep discussing these things regularly.

We are finding out more every day about our environment and the news is not
that good most of the time.

I think we at least need to know what risks we are taking and make our
decisions based on reality.

I also think this discussion about crazing is informative - these are the
kinds of discussions that we all learn from. We like to think it is all
simple - well it isn't and we need to open our minds and get on with
learning about our craft and make better pots.
