dead wood/skutt wheels

dead wood is a description of folks that sign off clayart
for three years at NOMAIL.

the computers at ACers are crowded with those kinds of
accounts. we want to rid ourselves of them.

to re/sign is a great way to find out who is what is who.

i have one of the best wheels ever made.
it is a skutt dc-1...dc for direct current.
it is strong, reliable, has a great base and works like a charm.
it had a flaw...it was very expensive at the time, and skutt stopped making
them.
the speed control was hooked to a fish leader, wrapped a certain
number of times on that control. it was prone to breaking.
a kid stomping on that wheel would break that wire in a heart beat.
mine has a new multi-stranded stainless cable that is in place for good.
i do not stomp my foot pedal. i have made thousands of pots on that wheel
for almost 25 years. it will last i imagine for 25 more. (my own fix of
that wheel saved 11 of them from the scrap heap at hopkins high
school...kept them all running for years.)

my first skutt wheel was the previously described wheel. i cannot remember
the number but, i think it was a b-1 or something. i used that for almost
15 years. my first power wheel from graduating from the leach wheel.
(denton m. vars, warrens brother in law, i think.) funny to remember that
name...my first wheel was from england...from the leach erra...woodley's
joinery, newton, poppelford, england. had a copper linedbox, smooth as
silk. but, my leg gave out. warren still kicks that same wheel. every day.
i have one leach kick wheel left...at the farm.
should sell it, no one ever throws on it anymore. great shape.
oh, well. someone will want it.

i love to think of fred nettleship, making cane handles. east coast
of england. brackish water reed. (hush tony about hand made
handles...) fred is long gone, but i sure like those early handles.
