When a good manufacturer designs and builds a Kiln it will be designed =
partly on a size -cost basis and the outer insulation will normally be =
of a lower temperature rating...as will the metal casing. Normal =
radiation will allow the materials to work efficiently.
Adding extra insulation to the outside of a lid or wall can bring the =
manufacturers materials to a temp. above their normal range..hence a =
cracking of firebricks and a redhot lid. If you consider the insulation =
of a kiln lid to be insufficient .then the lid should be completely =
rebuilt with a knowledge of the temp. grading of the materials in =
contains. The additional insulation would be added nearer the fireface
If the kiln had been designed with a much greater insulation..then the =
added cost could be significant...The designer and maker could be very =
skilled in giving you a kiln at a reasonable cost with a reasonable =
efficiency..
Sorry !!! Normally you get what you pay for and it is wisest to respect =
the Manufacturer/designer.
I have discussed this cost/efficiency business with a kiln designer and =
he put this scene in perspective for me.
