For those interested in a terrific 5 day workshop with Hector and Graciella
Gallegos, to Mata Ortiz, Mexico, Oct 6-13, call Vanessa Acosta @
323-982-0229, (Los Angeles)or email her @ catws@pacbell.net. The workshop
encompasses digging and mixing clay, making and painting pots in the Casas
Grandes/Mata Ortiz style, visits to ruins and the Paquime site and museum.
Ongoing translation is by Rose Figueroa of the Southwest Museum. Stays in a
modern inn with the workshop on site, in the town, all inclusive, with
airfare from Los Angeles-El PAso, is $1,195. This doesn't include tips to
maids, driver and guide, and 20$ entrance fee to Mexico. This trip is
extraordinary-the atmosphere is very relaxed, and on your free time as well
as with guide/translator, you can walk the town and buy pottery from the open
doors of all the potters, at about half the States rate. References
available. The weather is wonderful in OCt, and the inn/water/shower/food
facilities are excellent. Spouses can hang out or join in, no experience
necessary. Come along!

This is truly an opportunity.
I was lucky enough to do this workshop with Juan Quezada last year, who is a
very generous and patient teacher. I understand he's trying to catch-up on
all his back orders. Hopefully one of them is mine.

I was introduced to the Gallegos's in their home by Rose, who herself is a
fantastic woman. The Gallegos family is very talented with their son
producing wonderful pieces too.

If anyone is interested in a once in a lifetime experience with clay without
having to have any clay experience - This is it.

The food is home made, the air is clean (your out in the country), and your
visit is appreciated by the many potters in the village.

For those who collect indigenous pottery i.e., Pueblo pottery from New
Mexico and surrounding areas, with their $thousands of dollar price tags
(like the wonderful Santa Clara potters Nancy Youngblood Lugo, Tammy Garcia,
etc.) you'll find the Casas Grande Style - Mata Ortiz pottery prices low and
quality high in comparison.

I wish I could repeat the experience and go down there again.

If any of you are thinking of going - GO.
