Hi,
I wonder if you ever heard of this printer:
Cookbook Publishers inc
10800 Lakeview Ave
POBox 15920
Lenexa KS 66285-9802
1-800-227-7282
http://www.cookbookpublishers.com
My wife, Nan, has done two cookbooks using this firm and the price per copy
is a way less than you are being quoted by your printer. They had an
initial order of 200 printed and reordered 200 more a little later. They
were selling the books for $10 and making money on them.
There is a price sheet on the web site and it appears they get 3 to 5
dollars per copy depending on how many recipes there are in the book and
how many you buy.
This was the second book she did and it was for the Marin Republican
Women,Federated. This was about a year and a half ago . Cookbook Publishers
did all the typing and setup.
Seven years ago she did her first cookbook for her church and Nan did all
the layout in Pagemaker and later found out that they would do it.
These cookbooks are totally in black and white. I don't know about color.
You might be able to bind in the color pictures in a separately printed
section.
The way they are bound is the edges of the pages are punched with
rectangular holes all along the edge and a plastic binding that works like
a spiral binding is used.
Page size is 6 x 9 inches. The covers are heavy stock and are plastic
laminated. In the books my wife did, there are about 100 pages + a few
pages of boilerplate that the cookbook company provides.
If you get up against it you could slip back to this option so that the
project doesn't die.

Well, so far we've sold about 210 copies. We need to sell a MINIMUM =
(can I say that any louder?) *******MINIMUM************* of 500 copies =
in order to print this book, unless somebody generous comes up with some =
seed money to get the ball rolling. Two different people have advised =
me to ask on list for seed money just to save my sanity ;0), but I have =
resisted doing so, because we are so far along in the process. The =
facts are these:
The current quote for 500 copies is about $21 per book. If we sell 1000 =
copies, it's about $18 per book. If we sell 2000 copies (be still my =
heart!) the price drops even more dramatically. Any and all profit goes =
directly to the Clayart fund, period. I am not getting paid one thin =
dime for my time or effort on selling the book, and let me just say that =
my time and effort have been considerable. I'm not complaining, just =
stating a fact. I have spent over 24 hours on layout alone, NOT =
including editing recipes, cropping photos, trips to the printer, =
setting up the website, and begging folks to PLEASE BUY THIS BOOK! When =
I took all the stuff to the printer, I realized that _I_ don't even have =
an image in the book. I am going to have to get one scanned and drop =
off at the printer for inclusion! The only way I make any money at all =
is if you happen to order soaps at the same time you order your =
cookbook. ;0)
Bill Jones is going to put a blurb or ad of some kind in PMI for us. =
Ruth Butler has declined, based on their policy of a. not recommending =
books that are as yet unpublished and b. no free advertising for anyone. =
I suggested then that she could do a piece on the formation of the =
Clayart Fund, and include a blurb about the cookbook as an aside, but =
have not heard back. I wrote to Polly Beach last week and have recieved =
absolutely NO response from CT whatsoever. (If any of you has any pull =
with anyone at CT , please have a word with them on our behalf.)
If you are a reseller (ie: Brian at Highwater, or Howard Axner), and =
would like to carry the cookbook in your store, please contact me =
offlist. If you do not live in the USA and would like a shipping quote, =
contact me offlist. lpskeen@living-tree.net
As for everyone else, if you have NOT ordered your cookbooks yet because =
you are waiting to see what it will look like, I have put a mock-up of =
the book on the webpage. I don't have the cover done yet, and frankly =
would not be inclined to reveal it yet, 'cuz I want it to be a =
surprise!!! :) Please go order your copies at =
www.living-tree.net/schedule.htm
This thing will NOT be printed if we don't sell 500 copies.

Wow... my heart just sank when I read this post tonight. All that effort and
time by Lisa (with no pay) ...and all the efforts of the contributors to get
their recipes and photos to Lisa ready to publish ...and to hear that we are
LESS THAN HALF way there in sales of copies of this cookbook in order to get
it published.
Would be a huge disappointment if this project stalled due to lack of sales.
I think it's such a damn cool idea too. Well guys... I bought my 12 copies
already... and that's probably more than most... and I can't afford to buy
anymore at this time. Sure wish I had a solution. :-( Hate to see his thing
get dumped. I'll keep trying to think of a way to help if I can.

How about if we have a sponsors page, and look for some. I'm
wiling to call Axners, Sheffield Pottery Supply and Steve
Branman if it seems like a good idea. How about 100.00 a
sponsor.

Lisa,
Writing this on the run...haven't been much around (and reading e-mail)
recently.
Sent you a couple of veggie recipes the other day -- maybe too late. Saw
your plea for certain categories.
I can (this a.m.) send you a reliable, easy, delicious bread recipe, also
a wonderful blueberry concoction, but it sounds like you are up to your
ears, and past that phase.
Yes, I will be ordering a book for sure -- soon.
Will check e-mail a little later.

You might be able to bind in the color pictures in a separately printed
section.>
At Webbs Cottage we have been acting as publishers for a number of years.
But it's all in black and white, typeset via Word and then Publisher and run
off on a photocopier.
That way you can cut your overheads down considerably and publish limited
runs. I prefer to print just 99 at a time, because that is the limit of runs
on the photocopier.
A good guillotine and a system for binding are needed for finishing. And
then test the first 100 run and just save the masters for the next run.
If you have invested in a colour photocopier, then colour is an added
option.

It's fine with me, but someone else will have to do the cold calling, and
the sponsors will have to get thier camera-ready, black and white art to me
IMMEDIATELY, and I mean soon. The book is already at the printers getting
laid out.

Hi All
I like the idea of sponsors. I'm one of those people who actually enjoy
seeing which company's are supportive to clayartists. Or maybe we could
publish those who have bought a book, similar to the lists of donators one
often sees. It kind of spurrs other people on. I bought 5 books & look
forward to receiving them. Make great holiday gifts!
