Hello all.
I'm getting ready to attend my first soda firing "workshop" in early
September and I'm excited but also a bit worried.
The way the workshop is set up is that everyone brings around 15 bisque fired
pieces and when they arrive on site they will be provided with some glazes.
I would feel better if I could mix up a few glaze or slip recipes of my own
to bring (not liking to be totally dependent on what's provided and not even
being certain that fired samples will be provided with the glazes).
What can I say -- I had the opportunity to attend this workshop knowing that
I would be going in "blind" and I jumped at the chance! Being limited to
cone 6 oxidation I am "starving" for the experience of other types of firings
and the unique effects of each, especially soda, gas and wood.
To get myself started, I mixed up a few wide firing range slips and put them
on a few leather hard pots to see what the soda does to that. Wish me luck!
If anyone would be willing to share a glaze or slip recipe that works well in
soda, along with instructions on how best to apply them (and how thin/thick
to mix them) I would be very grateful.
I am using Miller's 900 clay body and a Grolleg body as well.
Once back from the workshop, I will report on how things went.
TIA
