Hi -
You may remember that last month I asked potters with web sites to
answer a few questions about them. I also surfed the net and sent to queries
to many pottery sites I found to get a broader picture.
There are two things that were so constant that I want to tell you all
right away - before all those absolutely wonderful 'consumer driven' shoppers
begin flagrantly indulging themselves with orgies of Christmas shopping on
the Internet. Yumm !!! ........Ooops got distracted there with visions of
sugarplums.
Anyhow, there is a huge co-relation between NO SALES and a site that
is not kept updated and refreshed on a regular basis. People stop visiting
because there is nothing new. Get new images and new text now. Almost 100% of
those reporting no sales or interest also said they were not doing any site
maintenance.
It is absolutely amazing how few sites actually ASK people to buy and
give them an easy way to do so. Most of you do not even have a page for
sales. You do not give potential customers a clue as to pricing or
availability let alone the size of the article in question. I found some
great sales oriented sites and can report that those who are catering to
customers are getting sales.
I am NOT refering here to those who have set up a site strictly for
information and education, so please do not reply in a huff. I am refering
to those who wished that their sites were actually generating sales.
The complete article on starting a website will be in the Autumn Issue
of Pottery Making Illustrated, a magazine I highly recommend to all - newbie
or not.
Chris Campbell - in North Carolina - I was wondering if I too could disguise
a quick trip to the Krispy Kreme donut store as a fact finding trip ??? If
Tony can find a handle for his mugs, I am sure I could pick up a ton of
marketing savvy - starting with the glazed and working towards the chocolate
creme filled.
