new glaze book title

updated sun 26 aug 01

I have recently seen Susan Peterson's new book _Smashing Glazes_. It is =
a compilation of glazes from some 50 ceramists (I think). Has anyone =
seen or used this book? What firing ranges are represented in the =
collection?

Thanks,

It has low, midrange, high fire and a special section which has wood, soda,
etc. About 15 artists in each section, with a selected piece from each one.
It's a nice book, a pretty wide variation of treatments, and some comments
by each potter on their decorative technique. I would have liked the
written descriptions to be a little longer for each selection. But I'm the
type who rushes through books and is sorry when they end. I eat my meals
fast too!

Another nice thing is that the potters are from a range of countries, not
just US and Canada.

Smashing glazes starts off at earthenware temperatures, has a section on
cone 6
cone 8, cone 9 and 10 reduction, and a section on 'other effects' , such as
layered pigment under resin.

Val Cushing, Tom Coleman, and a wide range of potters from all over the
world are represented.

Hi Joan,
Is that the title of the book, Smashing Glazes? And who is it
written/published by?
Thanks,
Diane

I have some recipes books and I wonder if the "Recpierators" are not
donating each other their recipes because I found some of the recipes
of "Book A" in Book B" . We buy a collection, Do we get these recipes
again and again?
Tony Hansen offers in his books and site to start with a base glaze and
develop yourself from that one.
I agree and disagree. I found that the very - many recipes I tried,
an excellent laboratory of understanding the materials. I must say,Tony
Hansen has written to me that It was meant that people should not do
what they did not understand.(as he calls these books "text books")

Smashing Glazes is by Susan Petersen.

It seems to be published by 'Guild Publishers.' Never heard of them. But
found a web site. I ordered it from Amazon.com.

Each double page is allocated to an artist - method of making and decorating
is outlined, recipes given and large photograph attached. Each artist uses
glazes entirely differently. Not a technical book. Rather a technique - al
one.

Cone 6 Glazes by Mike Bailey of Bath Potters (also a new book) focusses
entirely on cone 6, and is a wonderful book. He also has illustrations of
one of Tony Hansen's base glazes with a variety of colourant additions.... A
clever book as it centres most of the exemplar recipes on a limited number
of general ingredients.

I now forward to the Ron Roy/John Hesselbeth publication .... Very
exciting.

Hi Joan,

Thanks. Just a quick update. We are on schedule with a review/proof-reading
manuscript scheduled to go out to 4 reviewers (3 of whom are Clayart
members) on September 1. Believe it or not Ron and I are still talking to
each other and having fun writing/doing this.

John
