Dear Paulette Carr,
And others who have been experiencing problems of unevenness in firings.
There was an excellent article in a Ceramics Monthly many years ago =
about fine tuning gas and wood fired kilns. Can't recall which year but =
it was early eighties. I recall if a kiln is hot at the top and cool at =
the base you lower the bag wall, if cool at the top and hot at the base =
build the bag wall up. You can also fine tune by leaving gaps between =
the bricks. Other things involved are stack height, firemouth area to =
stack port area ratios and the way you use the damper.
However, a lot depends on the design and the manufacturers instructions. =
When you build your own kilns you get into the habit of learning these =
things via observation and experiment.
I can't say a lot about electric kilns but I recall some have elements =
in the door and on the floor to give better heat distribution. Perhaps =
when a top vent is used to draw air in to vent via the base it is =
necessary to have the roof or the lid of a top loader wired as well. =
What do the electric kiln designers have to say about this?
Best regards,
Ivor Lewis. Redhill, South Australia.=20
