sondahl website imperilled

I'm involved with a Catch-22 type situation with my webspace provider
(about.com) where they want me to approve certain changes to my web page
or it will be deleted but when I follow their instructions there is no
way to do what they say.
I've contacted their help people to no good end.
So it is possible after Sept. 9 my current site will vanish, with all
its useful information for potters on tools, crystalline and other cone
10 oxidation glazes.
So you may wish to visit it before then, if you haven't already.

Hi Brad ~

I can recommend a better free hosting service ...
http://www.freeprohosting.com

We offer a free online course in web development, and many of our
students use Prohosting. If you need help transferring your site ...

Both www.sondahl.com and www.bsondahl.com appear to be free. You could buy one
of those domain names for two years for about $30 - $40. A reliable web site
with pair.com (unix based) costs $16.95 a month (less if you pay quarterly or
yearly). With your name recognition, it would seem like you could make the
$243.40
a year this would cost in one or two sales.

I have 4 separate domain names running at pair.com, and the total cost is only
$18.95 a month! (www.micrfonts.com, www.micrfont.com, www.barcodingfonts.com,
www.barcodingfont.com)

Thanks to those who have expressed support. I'm not planning on having
my info disappear from the web, but moving is hard, having just handed
out my web address to hundreds of customers this summer... I'm still
hoping there will be some solution to staying at my current free
provider.
As regards Gary Elfring's post (quoted below), I'm cautious to spend
money on webhosting and names. The 243.40 cited would represent about
my total sales from the web for a year, and although that kind of
balance sheet is the envy of dot.coms, I prefer to let people do a bit
of typing and stick with free servers. Unfortunately, they are folding
rapidly. I used to have my pottery page on "Freemerchant.com" which now
charges everyone. I know I can move my page to my local dialup
provider, Earthnet, except I've been hoping to leave dialup land behind
in favor of the fast lane which will probably reach Spirit Lake in 2080.

Hi Brad,

Not to belabor a point, but I think in your case you can't afford to not
affix you web claim more permanently. I've searched for your web site
a number of times to find several dead links (some of them):

http://www.camasnet.com/~asondahl
links to you from claystation
from artrans.com

Fortunately now the first site for you to come up in a search is your
about.com one... which unfortunatley won't exist in the long run!
Dead/old links are a constant thing to deal with given the propensity to
archive web based information. And it's aparent that you're working to
make a name for yourself. You are sited in several web sites (if you
haven't done a web search for your self do it!) and your web site has been
written about in PMI. Do you want to deal with moving sites again? Do
you think all these sites will be diligent about updating their link for
you?

The $243.40 sited to have your own url and site hosted may seem imposing-
however the url cost runs for two year spans, so you won't pay $243.40
each year, but instead slightly less. (another option is to buy your url
from a European outfit in Euros and play the dollar game. I believe
Gandhi charges $12 a year at a time). Also, after buying your own url, you
can always change providers without lossing your address. If $17 a month
doesn't work for you, I highly urge you to look locally for a
provider/hosting deal. Often your local small web businesses have special
deals cut that give them great rates on hosting servers.

I also think your web sales could account for this cost! Referencing the
aforementioned problem of old urls being listed for you... you have
several clayart posts with the url sondahl.safeshopper.com in your
signature as a way to view your work for sale. Unfortunately, this
currently doesn't work- which may put off potential customers. While it
isn't easy to fix the problem of old urls in old emails, hopefully as time
goes by your new shopping url will achieve more permanence. Also, with
the usage of paypal becoming more wide spread, it's becoming easier to
offer secure shopping on your own web site.

I hope you find resolution to your web site moves. If you have any
questions at all about web issues, please email me! I have web monkeys on
hand to whom I can forward your questions (both my partners do this for a
living).

Good luck Brad

Jocelyn

It is $8.95 a year to register a name at GoDaddy.com for 1 year. They will host
your web site for $9.95 a month. That makes your cost only $128 a year.
