Handles handles handles.... very important appendage ... My thoughts on
this subject might be hard to articulate as my thoughts are never clear
even to me most of the time.. I am aware that men and women for the most
part like different type handles ..to over simplify : women like to hold mugs
close to them , cuddle so to speak use both hands... Men like to stick
their whole hand in the handle and be able to gesture ( beer stein style )
. ok ok not all people all the time but its a gender thing for the most
part.. I am a woman and I do like a handle that is tapered both ways (
length and width) I like 1 or 2 fingers max in the hole and the finger that
is on the outside should be comfortable. as far as placement goes... now
that is something I have been working at for years and years.... Robin
Hopper has the theory that center of gravity is the place to put the
handle... thats when you run a line diagonally from the highest point to the
lowest point and then run a line down the middle and where the lines
intersect is the center of gravity... well thats great for pouring vessels
but not necessarily the most comfortable place for mugs... nor is it
always the most pleasing place to put it visually... you have to weigh all
these things when your thinking about placement... I have been zeroing in
on handles for a few yrs now and have gone way overboard and hyper focused to
the point that I am nuts... hey all my friends think I am insane now they
have proof ... not that this was first opportunity to get proof ;o) For
me a wonderful field trip would be going out looking at handles on pots and
pans and kitchen ware and handles on everything heck see how anything is
attached to anything... take a drawing pad and go for it... I love
learning and seeing and this is a pretty neat topic to me so hope some of
you wonderful teachers out there will give more imput on the subject...
ohhh one thing I do have a prejudice on is visually weak handle
attachments... I cringe when I see a beautiful pot with a beautiful handle
except where it attaches to the bottom and looks like it will break right off
visually... its like fingernails across a black board for me.... dont know
why it affects me that way but it does... CAT without a hat :o(

Handles. Very interesting. Then theres the kind of handle that you can't even
put one finger through so that it forces your pinkie up in the air. I think
the Brits invented this.
