david leach's yellow celadon glaze

updated wed 5 sep 01

I have a monograph by David Leach published in 1977 where he gives the
recipe for four of his standard glazes and says "Glaze colours mostly
derived from iron with a number of Tenmoku types using 7-12% of iron oxide.
All glazes are reduced".
1. Jade Green celadon at 1270 C. reduced:-
"5 Cornish Stone
25 China Clay
25 Whiting
25 Quartz
2 Red Iron Oxide
For a bluey-green Ying Ch'ing Celedon use the same recipe with the iron
oxide reduced to .5%

2. For Tenmoku at 1300 C
66 Cornish Stone
11.5 Whiting
15 Quartz 7.5 Red Iron Oxide
Apply thickly for black effects, and thinner for Kaki. Play one against the
other with wax or paper resists for contrasting patterns.

3. A red glaze for temperatures 1260-1300 C reduced
50 nepheline syenite
50 Calcined Red Clay
Not all red clays will work and you will need to experiment. Calcine the
clay at a low temperature (600 C). Grind well. The glaze is applied
thickly over another glaze with a slip trailer and, if successful, will fire
to red at 1260 C and to orange at 1300 C.

4. A Talc dolomite glaze for 1280 C. Reduced or oxidised.
45.4 Feldspar
17.6 Dolomite
2.75 Bone Ash
22.2 China Clay
2.75 Quartz
9.3 Talc
This is typically a mottled, satin-matt glaze.
All the comments are David Leach's own. I can find no reference to a
yellow celadon as such, and will now keep a close eye on all the postings
hoping that there is something I've missed!

Bob Hollis is right!
The "new Edition" published 1988 has it on page 115:-
Yellow Celadon 1280 C Reduction
12 Talc
31 Potash feldspar
14 Whiting
7 China Clay
33 quartz
3 Red Iron Oxide
David adds the following note "This recipe tends to give a mustardy yellow
glaze which is dependent on the thickness of application and temperature, it
can crystallise"
I was with David at Bovey Tracey last month, he is well and as full of kind,
wise advice as ever.

I am looking for a a glaze called David leach's yellow celadon. I think it is
a cone 10 red glaze. I have checked the archives, and other glaze websites,
but have not found any ref. to it. Has any one ever used this glaze, and is
the recipe available? I would appreciate any help you could give. John

John,
If you know anyone with a copy of a book named "The Ceramic Review
Book of Bodies and Glazes" , this may not be the exact name but it is close
enough to identify the book, published in the early 1980's. I am certain
this glaze recipe is included .
Good hunting,

Hello All: I don't know anything about David Leach's Yellow Celedon, but
when I typed "David Leach Yellow Celedon" into the Google search engine
(http://www.google.com) I got sidetracked for a half hour looking at
beautiful pots. If you check it out, be sure to look at
http://www.studiopottery.com. It is the second listing on the page. It may
be old news to some of you but it blew my socks off. And I'm barefooted!

Here is the recipe which I tried last year in oxidationand reduction and got
a supremely nasty baby crap yellow in both cases.!

Talc 12
Potash Feldspar 31
Whiting 14
China Clay 7
Quartz 33
Red Iron Oxide 3

1280 celcius

Avril in the Forest of Dean UK, ps are you the John Gibson of Pottery
Decoration a Contemporary Approach? If so, thanks for your book it was very
valuable in my early college days. If not, greetings from the UK anyway!

Notes: "This recipe tends to give a mustardly yellow glaze which is

John
The following recipe is the one we have noted in the
workshop grimoire as "Leach's Yellow Celadon".

Cone 10 Reduction
Potash feldspar 32
Limestone 14.4
Kaolin 7.2
Silica 34
Talc 12.4
+ Red iron oxide 3%

Des
PS odd that a request should come in for this glaze,
we haven't used it for yonks, made batches of
ye olde Cone 10 red. glazes 2 days ago to go in the
next firing & the yellow celadon was included.
