Ok i've been suckered in to this one
I'm a tile maker
my clay formula
my glaze formula
i made most of the equipment
i make the designs(partly on a computer)
i cast the molds
I press by hand
I spray and brush glazes
Just what would you call my product if not handmade.
I realize that, at the point when i start reproducing
one design there is a problem (technically) with the
handmade definition.
But i'm certainly not going to market the product as
mass produced
sincerely

What would you call a Hamada pot made from a mold? He did that don't you
know? Oh yes, even he used the technology. If you have seen Susan
Peterson's movie you can see his workers knocking those things out like
gangbusters. Pretty things they were!
I would still call it a Hamada.
We are about a week away from releasing the new site with all the little
movies and other smoke and mirrors. There is a section there on the 36"
platters I cast up at Kohler. Hell, they were only 33" when they came out
of the firing. What can you say? If there is a will, there is a way.
There is also a section on the four-foot orb we tried to cast. The
greatest and best failure of my life! Long live the will to push, fail,
get back up, and try again!

Why don't we change the terms
Let all those who want to use the term "handmade", the right to do so.
Those who make pottery on the wheel or by hand can use the term
"hand-formed"
PS. The term "Handmade" in the Oxford dictionary defines it as the opposite
to machine made.
