I get all these loving private posts of support and promises of future
good behavior and ,oy veh, keeping Mel awake..

It made me feel like a fraud, because I suspect I am like most of us
about our own pots, squarely split between arrogance and vulnerability.

When anyone looks at my work ,I'd like respect for the effort, attention
to what was aimed for, admiration for the admirable and gentle dismissal
of that which doesn't come up to standard...no more, no less.

Truly, I love some of my work and other times I am sorely dissappointed
with what was to have been a wonder and turned out a dog.

At my advanced and mellow age, I really know wherein my temperament
falls short of the necessary discipline(100 plates..are you nuts ?... Not
enough time..have to try out everything, now, just like a spoiled child
at the dessert counter.) To counterbalance this, there is my
inexhaustable creativity and still a fair amount of energy..and always
the shining hope of ...oooh. this is really going to be beautiful!!

I do make some real mutts but every so often there's a winner.

I have never entered national competitions..saw no reason to spend the $
and the effort. I was not an acadamic who needed credentials and I sold
all the pots I made locally. I did have some professionally made slides
for local good fairs that required them, and got in about 85% of the time
and I did make a living as a potter, but what do real potters think of my
work, and that's where the gut clenches. Validation by one's peers is
important, so..its not the pots that are vulnerable; its me...and
sometimes thinskinnedness IS inappropriate.

Anyhow, for all those kind personal notes, many thanks. Enough already.

Arrogance & vulnability?
I suspect that the difference is that having enough of
a sense of self-consciousness to believe that our own
work is excellent, whilst retaining the personal
connection- a friend of mine from college used to say
that sending a pot out into the world is the same as
watching a child graduate from school. This is all
probably a pile of potters procrastination anyhow!
Anyhow Cheers for the community and carry on (I'll try
and develope my writing skills!
