Mel makes some hard but nevertheless truly valid points. However, I think
you are being needlessly defensive and setting yourself up to feel bad with
your "fraud" remarks. Think of it: there is a huge difference between
these and other students, being led through the various steps of the
ceramic process, and then having their pots fired for them, versus what
you and other clayarters are doing.. .
You (I assume) are on your own in deciding what to work on, making
technical and aesthetic and procedural decisions, plus you already have
stated that you "participate" in the firings. This is a far cry from the
student situation. I don't at all agree that half the list is in the same
boat that these students are. In fact, I am continually awed by the amount
of resourefulness and innovativeness that clayarters demonstrate.
As for glazes, why not let this whole theme motivate you to experiment with
a few new glazes of your own or that you read about.
