brent cxc or pacifica gt-800 and thomas stuart elite

I just purchased a Thomas Stuart Elite model about 3 weeks ago, it replaced
my Thomas Stuart kickwheel (which I must say is built very well). I am not a
professional potter, just a serious hobbyist. I have been down to Denver to
see Tom and where he builds these things. I am very impressed with both the
build quality and the willingness on his part to answer any questions that
you might have. The wheel body/splash pan seems to be constructed of molded
aluminum with a very heavy coat of enamel paint, the motor is bigger than
any other similarly rated motor, and the foot pedal could probably withstand
an elephant standing on it. If you do get a Thomas Stuart just make sure
that you order the wheelhead extension. As the splash pan is integral to the
wheel, if you are going to trim anything larger than say 16" you have to get
the wheel head elevated above the splash pan/body. But having a removable
wheelhead is great, all it takes is a quarter turn and lift up, what a great
idea. I have thrown on a Brent, Pacifica, and Creative Industries, and
initially thought that I wouldn't like a wheel that didn't have a removable
splash pan, but now I am totally sold, and probably wouldn't want to own
another that did have a removable splash pan. Now all it needs is a sloping
bottom with a drain plug for the wet stuff.

hey guys,

wheels, wheels, wheels??!!## well, i have maintained an worked on almost
all the popular brands. my opinion, i'll never buy another brent wheel.
last fall i spent $1000 (no kidding) on repair parts for the brent "c" and
"cxc" wheels in our studio. by the beginning of spring i already had five
wheels down. so, i started this semester with only 10 wheels. this year
instead of repairing the five downed wheels i wrote a letter to the vice
resident of the university explaining the situation and condition of the
equipment. just the other day i got a response from my note, we were
allotted $15000 to purchase new wheels. wow!!!! i think the answer to you
question is don't get the brent. it is again my opinion and even if i own a
brent, i'll never buy another one.

sooooo, while we are talking about wheels have any of you had any experience
with the thomas stuart (elite) wheel? i got to thinking about it after
bailey sent a (st-200) demo over. it's a pretty nice machine but i have
trouble with the vacuformed "plastic" body. i can't see this wheel holding
up in a university studio setting. shimpo is supposed to be sending a new
velocity for a good lookin' over. if you own or use one of these wheels i
would appreciate you opinions. thanks
