old chemicals

Think in terms of geology..
so I once was asked by a student how old the clay was...
I am sure he was asking how long it had been sitting, mixed...
but I asked him if he was asking me if the clay could have an age
in geological time????
So it would depend on whether the bags were wet, or stored well.

Diane,
If you have chemicals that have been stored without getting wet, they
will last forever. I have goodies which are no longer available, but they
can be incorporated in a glaze recipe which calls for them. Best way to
store any glaze ingredient is in a plastic container with a screw on lid.
Then you label the contents with an indelible pen.You are not dealing with
food products which have a certain shelf life. Mia in ABQ

Howdy,

Glaze materials are generally inert and will survive on the shelf for quite
a while.

Hi,
I have inherited some small quantities of chemicals for glaze mixing.
They are in bags from 5-20 pounds. The person who gave them to me doesn't
know how old they are. I threw away anything that was not clearly marked. My
question is- How long a shelf life do they have? I have heard that some
glazes have a limited shelf life(I guess this is another question!)
thank to all who advise.
Diane
