Dear Toni, et all...

I was born in Fort Worth...'Cow Town'...some called it still...lived
there...or near there...'till I was ten.

"Texas" we may recall...were it's own Nation once...it's own 'Republic'.

Had it's own Paper Money...it's own President...it's own
Constitution...everything...more or
less...as it could...back 'when'...

San Jacinto day...was a 'school' holiday...the 'Alamo'...a kind of
'Mecca'...when I was there...and as little boy...I was pleased to have been
allowed my pilgrimage.

Ol' Mex-hee-co, and various of... gave 'em some troubles...now and
then...mostly 'then'...

So it goes...with at least some mutual admirations bein' nodded...

Sam'l Colt had design'd the 'Walker'...just for Texas...IT was a handful...
To paraphrase Teddy Roosvelt...it would "fold 'em up...like a
'Jack-Knife'..."

Later on...The Mexican fellows liked those big-frame, .44-40 "Merwyn and
Hulbert"
revolvers...in
'Nickel'...

Texans favoured 'Colts'...and the .44 'S & W' now and then...in 'Blue' or
'brown'...and some 'M & H's...

The last boy what had fought in the U.S. Cavalry against 'Poncho
Villa'...just
passed away some weeks ago...those boys had the (John Browing ) .45 Auto
Colt, mdl of
1911...and they were pretty happy with 'em, too.
Their flap-holdsters pivoted on a brass bolster what said..."U.S." on
it...it pivoted to follow your leg... when yer in the Saddle...

Or the last that was known of, anyway...'Veterans'...from 'then'...
Maybe some left from those skirmish days...on the 'other' side...of the
'boarder'?
Maybe not...

Ol' Gen'l Patton had cut his teeth there...in those back and forth (mostly
'forth') of matters...I heard once, that his 'nanny' in Los Angeles, when he
was a little boy... had been retired Civil War Gen'l 'Joe' one-arm
Hooker...shirt sleeve...pinned up tidy...in those happy 1880s and '90s and
'ohs of Los Angeles breezes...

Funny...'Ponch Villa'...in some of the pictures I seen...looked a lot...like
'John Dillinger' who was a couple decades yet, to find his way...into the
'papers'.....

I got some clothes..in a trunk...supposed to have been...'Pershings'...from
on that 'campaign'...maybe they are...maybe they aren't...had some old notes
in the pockets...they are just...my size too...

Some say, the 'O-S-S' gave Patton a 'truck' for christmas...oweing to how
they liked his notions about 'Russia' so much...or how their 'bosses' did...

Sigh...

Anyway...

"Texas"...

Lotta gals there...or from there...'part' Cherokee...or 'Comanchee'...got
them 'eyes'...and...that 'temperment'...a certain somethin' in 'how' they
hold
their head...and it's like whales movin' beneath a little
boat somehow...

An' them 'Whales'..can be 'happy' or 'not'...

That sideways hint of a glance...when they're in the kitchen...cuttin' up
the green-beans...on a sultry day where the whisps of black hair stick to
their cheekbones...and ya think to yerself...'Oh-yea'...best not
'fight'...with this 'un...

"Peace"

Phil
