mercury tumbler switches

updated sun 30 sep 01

Angela, get that mercury to the Local Authority health inspector for safe
disposal.
I doubt if you will find anyone wanting such switches now.

I have a bottle of mercury, found after going through an old tool chest left
from father in law. Lucky for me that it did not break.
I am taking it to the Braintree District Council offices on Wednesday.
This stuff is too dangerous to have hanging around longer than absolutely
necessary.

when I was a child growing up in Plymouth (ours, not yours), I actually
enjoyed going to the dentist. The old guy was also the zoo vet, so was full
of all sorts of tales about head and hands down a crocodile's throat, and
the like.

but above all else he would give me mercury to play with to keep me quiet in
the waiting room, and very often a small phial to take home. Most of it
eventually went into the carpet, I guess... I must have been about 7 - 8.

if anyone has a "be worried" message, just keep it, ok?

Just wondering here...... but might not the postal and other shipping
regulations have something to say about shipping liquid mercury containin=
g
objects?

Anyone know?

For some other products containing hazardous materials you need special
permits and such.

If the product were damages in the shipping process and mercury escaped t=
he
containment, it'd be a "hazardous waste" spill issue, and mercury is a "h=
ot
button" issue these days.

Best,

There usually is "minimum reportable quantity" before hazardous materials
shipping regulations kick in. I doubt that these switches have a sufficient
quantity of mercury to require any thing special. You could check on the
Department of Transportation web site or the Post Office web site.

I would recommend shipping them in double zip lock bags. If they break, do
not open the bags but take straight to a household hazardous waste receiver.

thanks everyone who has given advice.

.....we have decided to drop it, as it seems to put it mildly got too =

only a thought anyway, recycling always better than throwing things =

one persons trash is another persons treasure (learned that in India,=20
