Vasantha,
Welcome to NY. Here is a short list of studios- Chambers St. Pottery(on west
side), Craft Student League(53rd St. Y on 53 and Lexington), Greenwich
House, and 92nd St Y on Lexington and 92nd St., Mud Sweat and Tears on 9th
Ave in the 40's. soda firing is done outside of the metropolitan area as an
independent workshop- in Woodstock.
I myself work in a studio in Queens(about a 30 minute subway ride from the
east side called the Potter's Wheel.
Hope this gets you started.
Christine

Hi, I recently moved to New York and am looking for a pottery studio in
Hoboken or NYC to work out of or take classes from. (A soda kiln would be
ideal, but not required) Do any of you have reccommendations?

Thanks!
Vasantha

Vasantha,
Greenwich House Pottery on Jones Street in Greenwich
Village offers a variety of classes. Their number is
212 242 4106.

The 92nd Street Y (on, where else, 92nd St. and Lex)
also has a pottery/ceramics program. I don't have their
phone number handy. Search them out on the web - they
have a site.

Mud, Sweat & Tears is a great studio on Tenth Ave at 46th St. (At least it
was several years ago when I studied there.) Their emphasis is (was?) on
wheel throwing and they have a lot of workshop, practice hours. At last
perusal through their retail gallery, they still have a selection of fabulous
cone 6 glazes, and teach layering of yummy, drippy, runny, textured rutile
glazes in such a way, that it is a signature staple of how I still glaze
today. No boring mono-color dips for me. Although they do have good solid
color glazes. (I am constantly on the search for another textured
rutile glaze to add to my own personal collection now -- but I digress...)
Anyways, they are only a short, safe walk from Port Authority.

Ditto on someone else's recommend of the 92nd St Y. They also have master
potter workshops now and then. Took a great one with Byron Temple. If Carmen
Soriano still teaches there, she is knowledgeable, patient and a real
talented, eclectic teacher (both wheel & handbuilding) and potter.
