Hello clayart buds! Haven't posted in a long time because I hadn't a whole
lot to say about anything. Surprise for me because I have a BIG mouth and
usually talk anyone and everyone's ear off.
Anyway, just wanted to let y'all know that if you haven't ever been to the
arts/crafts fair put on by the TACA (Tennessee arts and crafts association)
you need to go! I went yesterday (sat. 9/29/01) and met Kathy LeSueur. She
is a great potter. I bought one of her mugs, and I do believe it will become
one of my favorite to drink out of. Her handles are perfect for the form as
well as for my finger. I passed up on several different mugs made by
several different potters because I did not like the way the weight was
distributed by the handle. I would imagine it filled with coffee and know
that the mug would be uncomfortable to hold by the handle. Anyway, back to
Kathy. If you haven't seen her work, man it is good. Carvings,
impressions, ect on the clay partially glazed or fully glazed. She had a wide
variety of work there...Very nice woman. I said to her, "clayart?" she asked
me my name and of course didn't recognize it. It has been many months since
I posted last. I took a friend of mine to the fair with me who has no
art/craft education at all. She is a little more educated now! There was
also some beautiful crystalline glaze work there by a gentleman named Satian
Leksrisawat from Brooklyn NY. Blew me away! wonderfully delicate forms with
these gorgeous glazes. My friend's mind was amazed that the crystals were
"grown" during firing and that you don't know what you will get until you
open the kiln. Also bought a couple more mugs (one for me! and one for my
friend) by a gentleman from Florida. Can't remember his name, went through
the program with all the artisans names on it with material selling, and it
turns out there were 4 men from Florida there to sell pottery!!! Met Larry
Spears from Nashville, IN. Very nice man and once again very good pots and
glazes....One day, one day I will be one of those people manning the both
selling my ware to people.
I over heard one customer asking a potter if he had a "daytime" job because
surely his pottery alone couldn't support him...RUDE! He had cool mugs,
pots, vases, ect. I wanted to tell her, leave him alone! He'll make it one
day!
Take care y'all!
